When DIY is genuinely the right call — and yes, we'll tell you this in your yard too:

  • A single buried downspout run to obvious daylight — short trench, clear fall, low stakes.
  • You own real tools or don't mind renting a trencher, and clay digging doesn't scare you.
  • The failure cost is low: if it clogs in three years, you're annoyed, not flooded.

What kills DIY French drains in KC clay — the patterns we see when we dig them back up:

  1. The wrong fabric. Big-box landscape fabric is a weed barrier, not a filter. KC clay's ultra-fine particles blind it shut, the rock bed seals, and the drain quietly becomes a buried bathtub. Woven geotextile filter fabric costs a little more and is the difference between 3 years and 20.

  3. The wrong slope — or none. Clay spoil is heavy and the trench floor "looks" downhill; then one high spot leaves 30 feet of pipe holding water year-round. Continuous fall to a real discharge point is the entire game.

The real cost math: price out perforated pipe, washed rock by the ton, woven fabric, fittings, an emitter, and disposal for a 50-foot run and DIY materials alone commonly land in the several-hundred-dollar range — before the rented trencher and before your weekend meets undisturbed Kansas City clay.
