The longer answer

How clay changes the job. Sandy soil drains vertically, so water percolates down and away. KC clay barely percolates at all — water moves sideways across it and pools in low spots. That's exactly the situation a French drain is designed for: a gravel-and-pipe trench that intercepts that lateral water and carries it to an outlet faster than the clay can hold it.

What a clay-country French drain must have:

  1. Non-woven filter fabric wrapping the entire trench. Clay fines migrate. Without fabric, they plug the rock and the pipe within a few seasons — this is the #1 reason "French drains don't work in clay" gets repeated.
  2. Washed rock, not crusher fines. Fines pack like concrete in clay country.
  3. Rigid perforated pipe at a consistent slope (we target 1″ of fall per 8–10 ft minimum). Flexible corrugated pipe bellies and collects silt.
  4. A real outlet. Daylight on a downhill slope, a pop-up emitter, or a properly sized dry well. A French drain with nowhere to send water is just a wet trench.

What we tell KC homeowners honestly: in a bowl-shaped yard with no fall, a French drain alone may not be the answer — that's where regrading, a catch basin system, or a dry well comes in. That diagnosis is free: we walk the property, find the water path, and quote the fix that matches it.
