With high-pressure water. We locate the run and its outlet, then pressure-flush the line from the accessible ends until flow is restored and we can watch clean water exit. Most mud, leaf, and grit blockages clear this way. What we don't do is guess: if flushing won't restore flow, the line itself is damaged - crushed, root-invaded, or collapsed - and clearing attempts just delay the real fix.

The solid carrier pipe - the part that moves water to the outlet - usually can be pressure-flushed. The perforated collection section is a different story: when the gravel bed and fabric around the pipe have silted up (the usual failure in KC clay, especially on systems built with cheap landscape fabric), no amount of flushing restores the soil-to-pipe path. That system needs to be rebuilt, and we'll tell you which case yours is after flow testing.
The usual suspects in KC: single-wall corrugated pipe that crushed or sagged into low bellies that collect silt; tree roots finding the slots or joints; old clay drain tile that shifted and collapsed; downspouts feeding the line without any leaf protection; or a line laid flat so debris never flushes through. The repair conversation always includes what killed the line, so the fix doesn't repeat it.
Three things do most of the work: gutter guards or regular cleaning so the line stops eating leaves, a pop-up emitter or grated outlet you rinse once or twice a year, and continuous downhill slope so the line self-flushes every rain - which is how we build every replacement section.
