The longer answer — the same comparison we walk through on quotes

When we quote a drainage job, you'll often get both versions priced — a corrugated build and a PVC build — because the honest answer depends on your yard, not our preference. Here's the decision logic behind those two numbers:

Where dual-wall corrugated (HDPE) wins:

  • Open yard runs — high crush strength with the flow capacity of smooth pipe, since the interior wall is smooth even though the outside is ridged.
  • Snaking around obstacles — it flexes gently around trees, beds, and utilities without a fitting at every turn.
  • Budget — carrier runs typically price in the lower half of our published $25–$60/LF range.

Where PVC (SDR 35 / Schedule 40) wins:

  • Under driveways, sidewalks, and anything heavy — Schedule 40's wall thickness shrugs off vehicle loads and shallow bury depths.
  • Root country — solvent-welded and gasketed joints give roots no seam to exploit.
  • The long game — a rigid smooth bore stays round for decades and takes a pressure-flush cleanly if it ever needs one. Upper half of the $25–$60/LF band.

The pipe nobody should sell you as a carrier: single-wall corrugated — the thin black "big-O" pipe you can crush one-handed. It has a legitimate job as the perforated collection leg inside a properly built French drain, surrounded by rock. As a buried carrier line it sags into bellies, collects silt, and crushes under a wheelbarrow — it's the most common corpse on our drainage repair calls.

Mixed builds are normal: the most common premium design we install runs PVC under the driveway and dual-wall corrugated across the open yard — each material where it earns its cost. Both versions of your quote come from the same published pricing (downspout runs $300–$700, drain lines $25–$60/LF), so the choice is transparent.
