How it works

The downspout drops into a buried line that runs to a chosen point well away from the house. Water pressure pushes the spring-loaded or gravity lid up, the water leaves, and the lid drops back closed. Between rains it is flush enough to mow straight over.

Why it beats a splash block here

A splash block moves water about two feet. On the dense clay across most of the Kansas City metro, that water does not soak away — it sits, and saturated soil against a foundation is what drives basement seepage and settling. A pop-up emitter relocates the discharge entirely, typically 10 to 20 feet out, past the backfill zone and onto ground that can actually take it.

What makes one work or fail

  • Continuous fall. The line must slope consistently to the emitter. A belly holds water, and held water freezes.
  • Somewhere for the water to go. An emitter in a low spot just relocates the puddle. The outlet needs grade to run away from.
  • A clean outlet. Emitters silt up and get overgrown. They need occasional clearing, and a properly installed one is easy to get at.

Emitter vs open daylight

Where the grade falls away enough, we prefer to daylight the line — an open, armoured outlet on a slope, which cannot stick shut and is trivially easy to check. A pop-up emitter is the answer on flatter lots where there is no bank to daylight into. Both beat leaving the discharge at the wall.

Where this fits

Buried downspout extensions to a pop-up or daylight point are the most common drainage work we do, and for most Kansas City homes they solve the problem on their own. A full French drain is a different job for a different cause — ground water rather than roof water — and we will tell you which one you actually need.
