What is a Splash Block?

Splash Block: A concrete or plastic pad placed under a downspout discharge to disperse water and prevent erosion.

Full definition

A splash block is a shallow, rectangular pad placed on the ground directly beneath a downspout's discharge elbow. It disperses water flow, prevents soil erosion at the discharge point, and helps move water away from the foundation.

Most KC municipalities require splash blocks at every downspout terminus on grade. Concrete is most common; plastic is cheaper but lasts less long. Splash blocks should be replaced when they crack or sink into the soil.
