What it does
A full downspout running in a heavy storm is surprisingly heavy, and it flexes. Add a Kansas City wind gust against a two-story run and the connection at the top elbow takes real force. Straps spread that load into the wall so the downspout is not hanging off its own seams.
Types you will see
- Wrap-around (band) straps — encircle the downspout and fasten on both sides. The strongest option and what we use on tall runs.
- Pipe bands — a single band with one fastener. Fine on short runs, less so on two stories.
- Hidden or clip straps — lower profile for visible elevations, less holding power.
Correct spacing
The rule of thumb is a strap within roughly a foot of the top elbow, another near the bottom, and no more than about six feet between them in the middle. Two-story runs need at least three. Most of the failures we find are not broken straps — they are downspouts that only ever got two straps on a twenty-foot run.
Why they fail here
Two Kansas City-specific reasons. First, freeze-thaw: water left standing in a downspout expands as it freezes and pushes the seams apart, and the straps take that load. Second, fastener choice — straps driven into siding rather than into solid framing or masonry pull out over a few seasons. When we re-hang a downspout we fasten into something structural, not just the cladding.
What loose straps lead to
A downspout that has pulled away from the wall stops directing water where it was designed to go. Discharge lands at the foundation instead of at the extension, and you get the wet-basement and settling problems that cost far more than the strap did.
