What is a Downspout Strap?

Downspout Strap: A metal bracket that secures a downspout to the building wall.

Full definition

A downspout strap is a metal bracket (usually aluminum or galvanized steel) that secures a downspout to the building's exterior wall every 6-10 feet. Straps prevent the downspout from pulling away from the wall under wind load, water weight, or ice load.

Loose downspout straps are the most common storm-related gutter failure in KC. After a major wind event, inspect every downspout for loose or missing straps.
