Why Your Gutters Are Making Noise

Last updated: May 23, 2026 · Reading time ~5 min

Noisy gutters usually mean one of three things: (1) loose downspout straps causing rattle, (2) water falling on the inside bottom of the gutter from a high drop point (the 'ping'), or (3) a downspout elbow that vibrates in heavy flow. Each has a different fix.

Diagnosis by sound

Rhythmic drip 'ping': Water falling 2-3 feet from a roof valley onto the gutter bottom. Fix: rubber pad or splash guard inside the gutter at the impact point.

Rattling in wind: Loose downspout strap or end cap. Fix: tighten or re-rivet.

Vibration in heavy rain: Downspout elbow not secured firmly to wall. Fix: add an extra strap.

Banging in cold: Ice expansion in downspout. Fix: heat tape or accept seasonal noise.

Frequently asked

Is gutter noise damaging anything?

Usually no — just annoying. Persistent vibration can loosen hangers over years.

Can I add foam inside to dampen?

Yes — spray foam or rubber inserts work. Don't block water flow.

Why is it louder some seasons?

Cold metal is stiffer and rings more. Warm aluminum dampens sound naturally.
