How Many Downspouts Does My House Need?

Last updated: May 23, 2026 · Reading time ~5 min

The rule of thumb: one 2x3 downspout per 30 feet of gutter run or per 600 sq ft of roof, whichever requires more. A typical KC ranch needs 3-4 downspouts; a 2-story typically needs 4-6 (often 3x4 size). Spacing them evenly is more important than the exact count.

Rule of thumb

Count downspouts two ways and take the higher number:

  1. By roof area: Total roof sq ft ÷ 600 = number of 2x3 downspouts needed (or ÷ 1,200 for 3x4).
  2. By gutter length: Total gutter linear feet ÷ 30 = minimum downspout count.

Spacing matters more than count

Six downspouts all on one side of the house do nothing for the other side. Distribute them — ideally one at every outside corner, with additional mid-run downspouts on long stretches.

KC-specific consideration

KC clay soil holds water badly. Concentrating discharge from too few downspouts creates standing water that erodes the soil and eventually undermines the foundation. More downspouts = more discharge points = better dispersion.

Frequently asked

Can I just have 2 downspouts on a big house?

Technically yes but you'll get overflow in heavy storms and water concentration near the discharge points. Don't.

Do downspouts have to be at corners?

No, but corners hide the vertical run inside the inside-corner angle. Mid-run downspouts work but interrupt the visual line.

Should downspouts be on the front of the house?

Most owners prefer them on the back/sides for aesthetics. Functionally either works.
