Gutter Coil Thickness: .027 vs .032 vs Heavy-Gauge
Last updated: May 23, 2026 · Reading time ~5 min
Thickness affects everything
Aluminum thickness is the single under-discussed gutter spec. Cheap installers use .027" because it's cheaper coil. .032" is meaningfully stiffer — it holds shape better in long runs, resists denting from hail, and has more 'snap' when fastening hangers.
The hail-belt argument
KC averages 2-4 hail events per year that produce 1"+ hail. .027" gutters show dent damage starting at 0.75" hail. .032" gutters resist denting up to about 1.0" hail. The difference: a borderline storm might destroy .027" gutters and leave .032" alone — saving you a $3K insurance claim and the deductible.
Premier's standard
We install .032" on every residential job by default. .040" available on request (for commercial, heavily wooded properties, or owners who want max longevity). .027" available only on specific request — we don't recommend it.
Frequently asked
Will my insurance pay extra for .032" if hail destroys .027"?
No — but with .032", the storm probably doesn't destroy the gutters at all, saving you the deductible.
Does thickness affect color options?
No — same color palette in both thicknesses.
How do I know what thickness my current gutters are?
If you can pinch a section between thumb and finger and it deforms easily, you have .027". If it feels solid, you have .032" or thicker.
