The longer answer

Factors that affect aluminum gutter lifespan in KC:

  1. Gauge thickness. .025" (builder grade) lasts 20-25 years. .032" (premium) lasts 30-40+. We install .032" exclusively.
  2. Hanger type. Hidden hangers spaced 24" OC last decades. Spike-and-ferrule loosen in 5-10 years due to KC freeze-thaw.
  3. Ice dam exposure. Homes prone to ice dams have shorter gutter life. Adequate attic insulation extends lifespan significantly.
  4. Kynar paint finish. Sherwin-Williams Kynar 500 finishes are warranted against fade and chalk for 30+ years. Lower-quality enamels fade in 10-15.
  5. Maintenance. Clogged gutters that overflow stress the hangers and let water seep behind the gutter, rotting fascia. Regular cleaning (or gutter guards) preserves the system.

Why aluminum vs steel? Steel gutters were common in KC homes built before 1990. Steel lasts only 15-20 years before rusting through. Aluminum doesn't rust and is the standard premium material for residential gutters today.

Copper gutters last 75+ years and are appropriate for historic homes and architectural showcases. The investment is ~3x aluminum but the lifespan is double.
