The longer answer

What an interior system actually does: a channel cut into the slab perimeter catches water that has already come through or under the wall, routes it to a sump pit, and a pump ejects it. Done well, it genuinely keeps the floor dry. What it never does is stop water from entering your foundation — the wall stays wet, the soil stays saturated, and the system works forever because the problem arrives forever.

What exterior drainage does: cuts off the supply. The wet-basement math in Kansas City is dominated by delivery: a typical roof sheds 1,000+ gallons per inch of rain, and if downspouts drop it beside the wall, the clay holds it against your foundation like a sponge in a bucket. Fixing the delivery — burying the downspouts, correcting grade, intercepting uphill water — is cheaper by an order of magnitude and fixes the cause.

The honest decision framework:

  • Basement gets damp during and after rain, dry otherwise → surface water delivery. Exterior fix first, almost every time. Start with the cheapest correct step — often one or two buried downspout lines.
  • Water appears in dry spells, or the pit runs year-round → genuine groundwater. This is interior-system-and-sump territory, and we'll say so plainly — including that it's not our work to sell.
  • Finished basement you can't gamble with → do the outside work AND keep a healthy sump with battery backup as insurance. Belt and suspenders beats either alone.

Why the sales pitches differ so much: a waterproofing company sells interior systems, so every wet basement looks like a $12,000 interior job to them. We sell exterior drainage — so to keep ourselves honest, our assessment starts with the water path, and when the path says "high water table," we tell you to make the interior call. The test that settles it costs nothing: fix the outside water first, then see what's left. In most KC houses, nothing is.
