Steel gutters were standard on KC homes built before 1990. If you have them, they're approaching end-of-life. Here's why aluminum replaced steel as the residential standard and what to look for.
The fundamental problem with steel gutters in KC
Steel rusts. Galvanized steel (the coating used on most residential gutters before 1990) lasts 15-20 years in KC's freeze-thaw climate. After that, rust starts at hidden spots first: behind hangers, at miter corners, where water sits inside the bottom of the gutter.
Once rust starts, it accelerates. Painting over rust is a band-aid — the rust continues underneath. By the time you see rust from the ground, the back side of the gutter is usually 60-80% compromised.
Why aluminum solves it
Aluminum doesn't rust. It oxidizes (forms a thin protective layer), but that oxide layer is what protects the underlying metal. Aluminum gutters in KC typically last:
- .025″ gauge (builder grade): 20-25 years
- .027″ gauge (mid-tier): 25-30 years
- .032″ gauge (premium — what we install): 30-40+ years
How to tell what you have
Magnet test: Hold a fridge magnet against your gutter. If it sticks, you have steel. If it doesn't stick, you have aluminum or copper.
Visual test: Look for rust spots, especially in the bottom of the gutter or behind hangers. If you see rust anywhere, you have steel and it's at end of life.
What about cost?
In 2026 KC pricing:
- Steel: Not common anymore — most contractors don't even stock it. If installed today, ~$7-$9/lf for 5".
- Aluminum (premium .032″): $8.50-$10/lf for 5", $10-$14/lf for 6".
- Copper: $22-$32/lf for half-round (premium material, 75+ year life).
Aluminum costs about the same as steel did 20 years ago but lasts twice as long. There's almost no rational case for installing steel today.
Why some KC homes still have steel
If your home was built before 1990 and you've never replaced the gutters, you almost certainly have galvanized steel. Most of these are now 35-45 years old and well past their service life. We get calls every week from KC homeowners discovering they have rust-perforated steel during their first major fascia inspection.
Other reasons aluminum wins in KC
- Lighter weight: Less stress on fascia, less hanger failure over time
- Easier to form on-site: Truck-mounted roll-forming gives you continuous seamless gutters in any length
- 30+ color options: Sherwin-Williams Kynar 500 finishes with 30-year fade warranties
- No painting needed: Color is baked in, not surface-applied
- Recyclable: Old aluminum gutters are worth ~$0.30-$0.50/lb at scrap (steel is worth ~$0.05)
