Winterizing Your Gutters Before KC Winter
Last updated: May 23, 2026 · Reading time ~5 min
To winterize Kansas City gutters before December: (1) clean out all leaf debris by mid-November, (2) verify all downspouts are clear and discharging at least 5 feet from foundation, (3) check that gutter slopes are still correct (test with a hose), (4) consider heat tape if you've had ice dams before. Ice will form regardless; the goal is preventing ice dams.
The November checklist
- Final cleaning — remove all leaves and debris
- Hose-test every gutter section — water should drain fully, no pooling
- Inspect every downspout discharge — extensions in place, splash blocks present
- Check for any sagging or visible damage
- Trim back tree branches within 5 feet of the roof (now or in spring)
Heat tape decision
Heat tape (self-regulating cable) prevents ice from forming in gutters and downspouts. Costs $300-$800 installed for a typical KC home. Worth it if:
- You've had ice dam damage before
- You have a north-facing roof slope that doesn't get sun
- Your attic insulation is below R-30
What NOT to do
- Don't pour salt or de-icer in gutters — corrodes aluminum
- Don't chip ice out of gutters — dents aluminum and tears sealant
- Don't try to clean gutters once frozen — wait for thaw
Frequently asked
Will ice tear my gutters off?
Severe ice loads can. Heat tape and proper attic insulation are the prevention.
Does freezing damage gutter seals?
Over many cycles, yes. Annual inspection catches this before it becomes a leak.
What about leaving the hose connected to spigot?
Always disconnect outdoor hoses before first freeze — not gutter-related but critical KC winterization.
