What is a Statute of Limitations (Insurance)?

Statute of Limitations (Insurance): The legal deadline for filing an insurance claim — 5 years in both Missouri and Kansas for property damage.

Full definition

The statute of limitations for property-damage insurance claims is 5 years in both Missouri (RSMo §516.120) and Kansas (K.S.A. §60-511). The clock starts on the date of the loss event (e.g., the date of the hail storm), NOT the date you filed the claim.

Claims filed after the statute of limitations expires are time-barred, regardless of merit. If you suspect damage from an older storm, file as soon as possible — don't wait.
