What is a Ridge Vent?

Ridge Vent: A ventilation strip along the peak of a roof that allows hot attic air to escape, working with soffit vents.

Full definition

A ridge vent is a continuous ventilation opening along the peak of a sloped roof that allows hot attic air to exit. It works in concert with soffit vents (which let cool air enter the attic from below) to maintain proper attic airflow.

Adequate attic ventilation is the #1 prevention for ice dams — cooler attic = colder roof = no melting of snow until proper outdoor temperatures.
