What is a Fascia?

Fascia: The horizontal trim board behind the gutter that caps the rafter ends and supports the gutter mounting.

Full definition

The fascia is the vertical board running along the bottom edge of a roof, capping the ends of the rafters. The gutter mounts to this board via hangers. Fascia also forms the visible 'face' of the eave from the ground.

Most KC homes use 1x6 or 1x8 pine fascia. Newer construction may use composite (PVC or LP SmartSide) which doesn't rot. Pre-1960 homes often have cedar. Rot in the fascia is the leading cause of 'surprise' costs during a gutter replacement project.
