What is a Drip Edge?

Drip Edge: A metal flashing strip installed under the bottom row of shingles that directs water into the gutter rather than behind it.

Full definition

Drip edge flashing is a thin metal strip (usually aluminum or galvanized steel) installed at the perimeter of a roof, under the bottom row of shingles, extending out and down past the fascia board. It directs water that runs down the roof surface into the gutter cavity rather than letting it slip behind the gutter.

Required by modern roofing codes since the 2015 International Residential Code. Many KC homes roofed before 2000 don't have drip edge, which is why you see water-stained fascia behind otherwise-working gutters.
