What is a Downspout Diverter?

Downspout Diverter: A fitting that splits downspout flow between a rain barrel and a normal discharge path.

Full definition

A downspout diverter is a Y-shaped or T-shaped fitting installed mid-downspout that routes water into a rain barrel until full, then automatically diverts overflow to the normal discharge path. Most are spring-loaded or pivoting designs.

Important: install the diverter ABOVE the rain barrel's full-water line so the barrel can overflow back through the diverter instead of overflowing at the top.
