Seamless vs Sectional Gutters: Why Seamless Wins
Last updated: May 23, 2026 · Reading time ~5 min
How seamless is made
A gutter coil machine (sometimes called a 'brake' or 'former') is a 6-foot-long trailer that turns flat aluminum coil into a finished gutter profile in a continuous run. The machine pulls coil through 17-25 forming wheels that bend the metal into the K-style or half-round shape. The crew measures the gutter run, sets the machine, and out comes a single piece of gutter cut to exactly that length.
One gutter run = one piece of metal. The only seams are at corner miters where two runs meet at a 90° turn.
Why sectional is everywhere at Home Depot
Big-box stores sell 10-foot pre-cut sectional pieces because they can be stocked, shipped, and DIY-installed. Every 10 feet, two sections snap together with a slip joint — that joint is sealed with caulk and a clamp.
The problem: every joint is a leak waiting to happen in 5-8 years as the sealant fails. A 40-foot gutter run has 3-4 joints. A whole house has 20-30 joints. That's 20-30 leak points.
Cost difference
Seamless install: $8-$14/ft. Sectional install (by a handyman): $4-$8/ft. The sectional looks cheaper. The lifecycle cost is HIGHER because sectional leaks in 5-8 years and you do it again.
Frequently asked
Can a homeowner install seamless?
Not really — you need the brake machine ($25K+). DIY is sectional. If you DIY, expect 10-year max lifespan and plan to redo.
Are seamless gutters really seamless?
The straight runs are. Corner miters are still seamed (usually with rivets + sealant). With good installation, miters last 20+ years before resealing.
Can I have seamless 5" and 6" on the same house?
Yes — front and back can be different sizes if the roof geometry calls for it. We sometimes upsize the rear (toward the foundation) on 2-stories.
