Rain Chains vs Downspouts: When to Use Each
Last updated: May 23, 2026 · Reading time ~5 min
Rain chains are decorative copper or steel chains that replace one or more downspouts. They work as primary drainage only in light-rain climates — for Kansas City, use them as a decorative accent at a low-volume corner, not as the main drainage system. Combine with a planted catch basin or rain garden at the base.
How rain chains work
Water flows down the chain by surface tension and gravity, distributing the splash across the chain length instead of dropping in a single column. Designed for Japanese/Asian aesthetic and modest rainfall.
Why KC isn't ideal
KC's 4 in/hr design storm overwhelms rain chains — water cascades off the chain in all directions. They work for the first 30 minutes of a storm, then start splashing.
Where they make sense
Use rain chains on:
- A single front-corner downspout where aesthetic matters
- Low-volume sections (small porch roof, garden shed)
- Above a rain garden or catch basin designed for splash
Don't use them as your only downspout on any meaningful roof area.
Frequently asked
Will rain chains freeze in winter?
Yes — ice will form on them. Some homeowners remove for winter.
Do HOAs allow rain chains?
Many do as a design accent. Confirm with your HOA.
Maintenance?
Rinse occasionally; brush off pollen. Copper develops patina naturally.
