How to Prepare Your Home for Gutter Install

Last updated: May 23, 2026 · Reading time ~5 min

Three things to do the day before gutter installation: (1) clear driveway for the coil machine (need 25+ feet), (2) move outdoor furniture and grills at least 6 feet from the house perimeter, (3) close upstairs windows to prevent debris infiltration. Don't worry about anything else — we handle the rest.

Driveway access

The coil machine is a 6-foot trailer that needs to be parked where the crew can run gutter material the length of the house. Usually that's the driveway. Move cars to street if needed.

Perimeter clearing

Move grills, patio furniture, planters, and any outdoor decor at least 6 feet from the house. We tarp landscaping beds but loose furniture can get bumped.

Windows and doors

Close upstairs windows during the day — we're working close to them with metal-cutting tools. Small chance of debris drift, but easy to prevent.

Pets and kids

Keep them inside during install — loose hangers, screws, and metal scraps are around the work area until cleanup.

What you don't need to do

  • Cover landscaping (we tarp it)
  • Move your power meter or any utilities
  • Take down holiday lights, antennas, or hose reels (we work around them)
  • Empty your gutters first (we remove them entirely)

Frequently asked

Do I need to disconnect downspout extensions?

No — we remove all old gutters/downspouts/extensions as part of the install.

What about a holiday wreath on the door?

Fine to leave — we work around it.

Should I cover the floor inside in case of debris?

Not necessary — all work is outside.
