Worst KC Trees for Gutter Clogs
Last updated: May 23, 2026 · Reading time ~5 min
The KC tree leaderboard
Silver maple — biggest offender. Big floppy leaves + heavy spring seed-pod drop.
Sweetgum — drops both leaves and spiky 'gumball' seed pods that sit in gutters for years without guards.
Sycamore — palm-shaped leaves the size of dinner plates. Worst when wet.
Pin oak — late dropper (November), and leaves don't decompose.
Cottonwood — spring cottonwood fluff clogs guards AND downspouts.
If you can't remove the tree
Most KC homes can't realistically remove mature trees. Realistic options:
- LeafBlaster Pro guards — reduces cleanings from 3-4x/year to once every 2-3 years
- Larger gutters (6") — more capacity to handle clogs before overflowing
- Quarterly cleaning service — if you don't want guards
KC neighborhoods to expect tree problems
Brookside, Waldo, Crestwood, Hyde Park, Volker, Rockhill, Sunset Hill — anywhere with mature tree canopy. See the full leaf-drop calendar.
Frequently asked
Are pine needles a problem?
Yes — pine needles slip through standard gutter screens. Only micro-mesh guards (LeafBlaster Pro grade) stop them.
What about silver maple seed pods?
The 'whirlybird' seeds clog gutters in May/June. LeafBlaster Pro stops them at the mesh.
Should I trim tree branches over the roof?
Yes — trim branches back to at least 5 feet from the gutter. Reduces leaf drop, debris, and pest access.
