KC Rainfall Patterns: When and How Much
Last updated: May 23, 2026 · Reading time ~5 min
Annual pattern
KC receives ~39" of rain in a typical year, distributed unevenly:
- January: 1.1"
- March: 2.5"
- May: 5.5" (peak)
- June: 5.3"
- August: 4.0"
- October: 3.4"
- December: 1.5"
The May/June spike
Spring brings the highest rainfall AND the most intense storms (because of the warm/cold air collision over the central plains). May and June together deliver 28% of annual rainfall in roughly 17% of the year.
This is also when gutter problems become visible. Clogged gutters that 'were fine all winter' overflow in May. Failing miters leak in June.
Recommended maintenance timing
Schedule one gutter inspection or cleaning in late April — BEFORE the May storms. Catches winter debris and any spike-loosening from freeze/thaw. Adds 3-5 years to gutter life.
Frequently asked
Is KC's rain getting more intense over time?
NOAA data suggests yes — peak hourly rainfall intensity has trended up in the Midwest over the last 30 years. Sizing to 4 in/hr is now the floor, not the design max.
Should I oversize gutters for future-proofing?
6" instead of 5" is the easiest hedge. Adds 15% cost; gives you 40% more capacity.
When are gutters most likely to fail?
Big spring storms (May/June) and big fall freeze/thaw cycles (Nov/Dec) are the failure peaks.
