Gutter Heat Tape: When It's Worth Installing

Last updated: May 23, 2026 · Reading time ~5 min

Gutter heat tape (also called heat cable) is self-regulating electric cable that prevents ice from forming in gutters and downspouts. It costs $300-$800 installed for a typical KC home, uses about $20-$40/month in electricity during winter, and is worth it for homes with chronic ice-dam problems or where attic insulation upgrades aren't feasible.

How it works

Self-regulating heat cable adjusts its heat output based on ambient temperature. When it's 40°F, output is low. When it's 10°F, output is high. The cable runs along the inside bottom of the gutter and down inside the downspout, keeping a channel open even when surrounding ice forms.

When KC homes benefit

  • North-facing roofs that don't get sun
  • Homes with history of ice-dam damage
  • Homes where attic insulation can't be upgraded
  • Homes with complex roof valleys that concentrate snow melt

Cost

$300-$800 installed depending on linear feet covered. Operating cost: $20-$40/month December-February.

Frequently asked

Is it safe?

Yes — UL-listed self-regulating cable is designed for continuous outdoor use.

Can I DIY install?

Yes if you're comfortable with the cable routing. Hire an electrician for the GFCI outlet connection if you don't already have one.

Will it solve all ice-dam problems?

No — it manages symptoms but doesn't fix attic heat loss (the root cause).
