Downspout Sizing Guide: 2x3 vs 3x4 vs Round

Last updated: May 23, 2026 · Reading time ~5 min

Standard 2x3 downspouts handle about 600 sq ft of roof each; 3x4 oversized downspouts handle about 1,200 sq ft. For most Kansas City ranches, 2-3 downspouts of 2x3 are enough. 2-story homes typically need 4-6 downspouts (often 3x4) to handle the volume during KC summer downpours.

The 600/1,200 rule of thumb

A 2x3 rectangular downspout (the standard residential size in KC) has an opening of 6 sq inches. At typical KC rainfall rates, that drains roughly 600 sq ft of roof area before backing up.

A 3x4 rectangular downspout has 12 sq inches of opening — exactly 2x the capacity. It drains roughly 1,200 sq ft of roof.

Take your home's footprint (just the foundation area, not square footage) and divide by 600. That's how many 2x3 downspouts you need at minimum. Round up.

When to upsize to 3x4

Three scenarios:

  • Steep / 2-story roofs — same roof area but water has more velocity at the gutter.
  • Long runs without breaks — single downspout draining 50+ feet of gutter.
  • You've had overflow before — visible water sheeting over the gutter front during heavy rain.

Round downspouts (3-inch round)

Round downspouts pair with half-round gutters and historic-style installations. 3-inch round has about 7 sq inches of opening — between 2x3 and 3x4 capacity. Best aesthetic for craftsman, Tudor, and historic Plaza homes.

Frequently asked

Can I just add more downspouts instead of upsizing?

Yes — and it's often cheaper. Two 2x3 downspouts (12 sq in total) handle the same volume as one 3x4. Practical limit is one downspout every 25-30 linear feet of gutter.

Do I need separate downspouts for each corner?

No, but it's the cleanest design. Corner downspouts hide the vertical run inside an inside-corner. Mid-run downspouts work but break the visual line.

How long do downspouts need to extend from the house?

Most KC municipalities require 4-5 feet minimum, with splash blocks. See our permit pages for your specific city.
