Why Your Gutters Are Overflowing (Even When Clean)
Last updated: May 23, 2026 · Reading time ~5 min
Gutters overflow for one of four reasons: (1) undersized for roof area, (2) too few downspouts, (3) pitch lost over time, or (4) downspout clog you can't see. Even fully clean gutters will overflow if the system is undersized. Check the math: 5-inch gutter handles about 600 sq ft per 2x3 downspout.
The diagnostic flow
- Are gutters CLEAN? If no, clean first.
- Does water overflow uniformly or at specific spots? Uniform = undersize; localized = clog or slope issue.
- Does it happen only in heavy rain? If yes, likely undersized.
- Does it happen in every rain? If yes, likely a slope or clog problem.
Common fixes
- Undersized: Upsize 5" to 6" or add downspouts
- Few downspouts: Add one mid-run on long stretches
- Lost pitch: Rehang on hidden hangers at proper slope
- Hidden clog: Disassemble downspout and clear elbow
Frequently asked
Can I just add another downspout?
Yes — often the cheapest fix. $300-$500 per added downspout including discharge.
Is overflow always a gutter problem?
Sometimes it's a roof valley dumping more water than the gutter section can handle. Splash guard at the valley termination can help.
Should I install gutter wedges?
Wedges are a band-aid — sometimes useful for high-velocity corners. Not a long-term fix.
