How to Tell if Your Fascia is Rotting (Behind the Gutter)

Last updated: May 23, 2026 · Reading time ~5 min

Fascia rot diagnostic from the ground: look for vertical water staining on the fascia below gutter seams, peeling paint on the fascia, visible dark spots, or any place where the gutter has visibly pulled away from the wall. Any one of these warrants a ladder inspection (or a free contractor inspection).

Ground-level signs

  • Vertical streaks down the fascia under gutter seams
  • Peeling or bubbling paint anywhere on the fascia
  • Dark spots (mold/mildew) on the fascia surface
  • Visible gap between gutter back and fascia
  • Sagging gutter sections (hangers pulling out of soft wood)
  • Soffit panels that look stained or warped

Ladder-level confirmation

From a ladder, push a screwdriver against suspect fascia areas. Soft wood — you'll feel give. Solid wood — firm resistance. Probe every 12 inches in suspect zones.

Repair options

  • Localized rot: Cut out and splice new fascia ($4-$8/ft)
  • Widespread rot: Full fascia replacement ($6-$12/ft including paint)
  • Aluminum fascia wrap: Cover existing fascia with aluminum coil for permanent protection ($3-$6/ft on top of repair)

Frequently asked

Can rotted fascia damage the roof?

Yes — over time, rot spreads into roof sheathing and rafter ends. Address quickly.

Why does this happen behind perfectly-good gutters?

Even small leaks at miters or hangers, sustained for years, soak the fascia. Often the gutters themselves look fine.

Can you replace fascia without removing the roof?

Yes — we splice in from below with the gutters removed.
