After Install: Care, Walkthrough, and First Rain

Last updated: May 23, 2026 · Reading time ~5 min

After gutter installation, a quality crew does a walkthrough showing you every miter and downspout, runs water from a hose to verify flow, and provides written care instructions. The first heavy rain after install is your real test — gutters should drain completely with no overflow, no foundation discharge, and no visible drip points.

The walkthrough

Before we leave, we walk you through:

  • Every miter (corner) — you should see no visible gap or sealant excess
  • Every downspout — secure top and bottom, splash block placed
  • The hose test — we'll run water at the high end and you can confirm flow at the discharge
  • Your warranty paperwork

The first rain

After your first heavy rain, walk the perimeter:

  • Any visible water sheeting over gutter front? Could be undersized or blocked.
  • Any water dripping from miters or end caps? Call us back.
  • Any water pooling at downspout discharge? Extensions may need lengthening.

When to call us back

Call within 30 days if anything looks off. Workmanship issues addressed at no charge under warranty. We'd rather you call about a non-issue than ignore a real one.

Frequently asked

How long until I should expect any issues?

Quality installs are usually issue-free for 5-10 years. First problems typically show up at miters around year 8-12.

Should I caulk anything myself?

No — if you see a gap, call us. DIY caulking can void warranty.

Can I add extensions myself later?

Yes, extensions are an easy DIY. Hose to discharge, glue/snap on extension, done.
