5" vs 6" Gutters: Which Size Do You Need?
Last updated: May 23, 2026 · Reading time ~5 min
The math on capacity
5" K-style gutter holds about 1.2 gallons per linear foot at maximum fill. 6" K-style holds about 1.7 gallons. That's a 40% capacity increase for a 20% width increase.
When 5" is fine
Single-story ranch, hip or gable roof, less than 2,500 sq ft of roof area, average pitch (5/12 to 7/12). 90% of KC ranches fall in this bucket.
When to upsize to 6"
Any of: two-story home, steep roof (8/12+), large roof (2,500+ sq ft), history of overflow, single downspout draining 30+ ft of gutter, or aesthetic preference (6" looks more proportional on big houses).
Frequently asked
Does 6" cost a lot more?
About 15% more per linear foot ($1-$2/ft difference). Worth it on the right house.
Can I have 5" front, 6" back?
Yes — common when the rear elevation has more roof area drainage.
What about 7" or 8" gutters?
Available but rare in residential. Almost always commercial.
