Wasps or hornets in my gutter — what to do

If wasps are nesting in your gutter or under the eave: (1) don't try to clean the gutter until the nest is treated, (2) treat from the ground with wasp spray at dusk when wasps are inactive, (3) wait 24-48 hours and inspect for activity, (4) remove the empty nest, (5) install gutter guards to prevent re-nesting.

Identify what you're dealing with

Paper wasps: Build small umbrella-shaped nests under eaves and inside open gutters. Less aggressive but will sting if disturbed.

Hornets (Bald-faced): Build large football-shaped paper nests, often in trees but sometimes under eaves. Very aggressive when disturbed.

Yellow jackets: Often nest in soffit cavities or wall voids accessed through gaps near gutters. Most aggressive and dangerous.

Safe treatment

  1. Wait until dusk — wasps are inactive when temperatures drop.
  2. Wear long sleeves, long pants, closed shoes, gloves, and a hat.
  3. Use a wasp spray rated for distance ("Wasp & Hornet Jet" type) — sprays 15-20 feet, so you can stand back.
  4. Aim at the nest entrance and saturate.
  5. Retreat to inside the house.
  6. Wait 24-48 hours, then re-inspect.
  7. Repeat if any activity.

For large nests or hard-to-reach locations, hire a pest control company.

Remove the empty nest and prevent return

Once you confirm zero activity, remove the empty nest (it won't be reused but the structure attracts new colonies). Then:

  • Install gutter guards (LeafBlaster Pro) — wasps can't access the gutter cavity through the mesh.
  • Seal gaps in soffit and fascia where yellow jackets might enter wall voids.
  • Inspect monthly during summer for new construction.

Frequently asked

Is it safe to clean gutters with a wasp nest present?

Absolutely not. Disturbing the nest will trigger an attack. Treat the nest first.

Should I just leave them alone if they're not bothering me?

Risk increases as the colony grows. By late summer, a paper wasp colony can have 50+ wasps. Treat early.

Can wasps damage gutters?

No structural damage from the insects themselves, but paper wasp nests inside gutters block water flow.
