Roof valley sheeting water past my gutter — fix
Why it happens
A roof valley concentrates water from two roof planes into a single channel. By the time that water reaches the gutter, it has significant velocity. On steep roofs especially, the water can shoot OVER the front lip of the gutter rather than dropping into it.
The splash guard fix
A splash guard is a small piece of metal (typically aluminum, 8-12 inches tall, 12-18 inches long) installed inside the gutter at the valley impact point. It catches the splashing water and redirects it down into the gutter cavity.
Installation: rivet to the front lip of the gutter at the valley impact zone. Seal the joint. Takes 20-30 minutes per splash guard.
Cost
DIY: about $15-$30 for the splash guard itself plus rivets and sealant. Professional install: $80-$150 per splash guard if added to an existing system.
Other options
If splash guards don't fully solve it (rare), the alternatives are: upsize that gutter section to 6" for more catch area, or install a roof valley diverter (a metal piece on the roof itself that redirects valley water). Roof diverters are best installed during a re-roof.
Frequently asked
Will my insurance pay for splash guards?
No — this is a design/construction issue, not storm damage.
Do all roof valleys need splash guards?
No — most valleys drain into gutters cleanly. Only high-velocity ones need guards.
Can I DIY this?
Yes if you're comfortable on a ladder. Buy splash guards at any home improvement store.
