Pigeon or bird nest in my downspout — how to remove
Legal considerations first
Important: most migratory birds (including most species commonly nesting in downspouts) are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. It's illegal to remove active nests with eggs or chicks for protected species. Pigeons (Rock Doves), House Sparrows, and European Starlings are NOT protected and can be removed anytime.
Best practice: identify the bird first. If unsure, wait until August in KC when most nesting season is over.
Safe nest removal process
- Get a ladder, work gloves, dust mask (nests are dusty and may carry mites), and a trash bag.
- Disassemble the downspout at the elbow closest to the nest location.
- Gently extract nest material into the bag.
- Inspect for any remaining material with a flashlight.
- Hose the inside of the downspout to flush remaining debris.
- Reassemble.
Prevent re-nesting
- Install a mesh cap on the downspout top where it meets the gutter.
- Add hardware cloth (1/4-inch mesh) over the gutter side of the downspout drop outlet.
- Cover open downspout elbows with mesh during nesting season.
- Long-term: install gutter guards (LeafBlaster Pro) which prevent birds from accessing the gutter.
Frequently asked
Will the bird come back to nest again next year?
If you don't block access, yes — many species return to the same nest site annually.
Are bird nests a health hazard?
Nests can carry mites, lice, and (rarely) bacteria. Use gloves and a dust mask during removal. Wash hands thoroughly after.
Should I hire a wildlife professional?
For protected species during nesting season, yes. Otherwise, DIY removal is fine with appropriate PPE.
