My gutters froze and burst — emergency repair
Wait for thaw before doing anything
Frozen aluminum is brittle and tears further if you try to manipulate it. Don't chip ice, don't try to disconnect downspouts, don't attempt repair while metal is frozen. Wait for daytime temperatures consistently above 40°F.
Document for insurance
Photograph from multiple angles:
- The split or burst section
- The full gutter run from end to end
- The roof above the gutter
- The downspout from top to bottom
- Any water damage visible on the wall or foundation
Check your homeowner's policy. Some carriers cover "weight of ice and snow" damage explicitly; others exclude. If covered, file the claim within the statute of limitations (5 years in MO and KS).
Why patching doesn't work for burst metal
When aluminum splits from ice expansion, the metal is stretched and weakened along the entire burst zone. Patching with flashing and sealant lasts 6-12 months before the patch fails. The right repair is to cut out the damaged section (typically 4-8 feet) and splice in new gutter.
Prevent it from happening again
Burst gutters from ice mean two underlying issues: (1) ice is forming because of attic heat loss (root cause), and (2) your gutters can't handle the ice load. Address both:
- Attic insulation: upgrade to R-49+ if currently below R-30
- Attic ventilation: verify soffit + ridge vents are clear and balanced
- Heat tape: install self-regulating cable in gutters and downspouts ($300-$800)
- Downspout strap upgrade: add extra straps to support ice weight
Frequently asked
Can I use a hair dryer to thaw a frozen gutter?
For small ice plugs in a downspout, sometimes. For burst metal, no — you can't un-burst it. Wait for thaw.
Will insurance pay for the full replacement?
If covered, typically yes (minus deductible). Get an independent contractor scope before filing.
Should I just remove the gutters for winter?
Generally no — the labor cost of removal/reinstallation isn't worth it. Better to address the root cause (attic insulation).
