Gutter sagging in the middle — what causes and how to fix
Why it sags
A gutter that sags mid-run is telling you that the support at that point has failed. Three common causes:
- Spike-and-ferrule pull-out (most common). 25+ year old installs with 8-inch nails work loose.
- Hangers spaced too far apart. Some cheap installs use hangers every 36-48 inches, which can't support the weight of water + leaves + ice mid-span.
- Fascia rot. Hangers can't bite into soft wood. The wood gives, hangers pull through, gutter sags.
Confirm the diagnosis
From a ladder, press up on the sag point. If it lifts easily back into position, the hangers there have failed or are missing. If the wood behind feels soft when you probe with a screwdriver, you have fascia rot.
The fix
If hangers only: Install hidden hangers every 24 inches along the entire sagging run. $5-$8 per linear foot DIY material; $300-$700 professionally done per section.
If fascia rot also: Splice in new fascia where rotted, then rehang. $4-$8/ft for fascia + the rehang cost. Often makes sense to replace the whole section.
If gutter is 25+ years old: Often more cost-effective to replace the whole gutter system with new aluminum + hidden hangers. $1,500-$3,500 for a typical ranch.
Frequently asked
Can the gutter snap from sagging?
Rarely — aluminum is flexible. More likely it just pulls off the fascia entirely.
Should I add a wood block behind the sag for support?
No — that's a band-aid. Proper hangers do the job correctly.
How quickly should I address this?
Within 30-60 days. A sagging gutter doesn't drain properly and can become a foundation-water problem.
