Gutter pulling away from house — what to do
Why it's pulling away
If your home was built 1960-1995 in the KC metro, your gutters were almost certainly installed with spike-and-ferrule hangers — an 8-inch nail through the front of the gutter. Over 25-30 years of KC thermal cycling, those nails work loose. The gutter sags, then pulls off.
Emergency temporary fix
If the gutter is loose but not yet detached, you can buy time with a quick fix:
- Get an extension ladder and a helper.
- Push the gutter back into position against the fascia.
- Install a heavy-duty hidden hanger (sold at any hardware store) at the loose point. Screw into solid fascia wood.
- Move along the run, adding hangers every 24 inches.
This works for 6-24 months. The real fix is full rehang or replacement.
Full repair: rehang on hidden hangers
The proper fix is to remove all old spike-and-ferrule hardware, inspect the fascia for rot, and install hidden hangers every 24 inches on solid fascia wood. Cost: $300-$700 per gutter section professionally done.
Or: replace entirely if 25+ years old
If your gutters are 25+ years old and on spike-and-ferrule hardware, the cost-effective decision is usually full replacement, not repair. The coil itself is at end of life and new hangers won't extend it meaningfully.
Frequently asked
Will it fall on someone?
If visibly loose, yes — don't stand under it during high winds. Schedule repair urgently.
Can I drive screws through the existing spike holes?
Sometimes, if the hole is small. Usually better to use hidden hangers at fresh locations.
Is this an emergency repair?
Not immediately, unless the section is actively hanging. Schedule within 30 days to prevent further damage.
