## Short answer

Fascia is the vertical board that runs along your roof edge - the board your gutters are screwed into. Soffit is the horizontal panel underneath the overhang - the surface you see when you stand at the wall and look up. Together they close off the roof edge: fascia carries the gutter load, soffit seals the attic from weather and pests. They fail together, almost always because of gutter water, which is why a gutter company is the right trade to fix them.

Fascia is structural trim: it caps the rafter tails, gives the roofline a straight finished edge, and - most importantly - holds every gutter hanger on the house. Soffit is the ceiling of your roof overhang. It closes the attic off from rain, wasps, birds, and squirrels. A soft or sagging soffit is an open door - animals find it fast.
