# Standing water around your sump pump discharge (Kansas City)

**Short answer:** Your pump is probably fine - the discharge point is the problem. Most sump lines dump water 3-6 feet from the wall into KC clay that can't absorb it. It pools, the yard stays swampy, and much of it soaks back down to the sump pit so the pump lifts the same water again (the recirculation loop that makes pumps "run constantly" and wear out early). Fix: a buried discharge line at continuous downhill slope, 5-30 ft, to a pop-up emitter or daylight outlet at a true low point. $300-$700 per line installed.

**Check first:** if a buried line already exists, look 8-15 ft out for a silted-over pop-up emitter - the most common and cheapest fix.
**Not us:** if the pump itself won't run, that's a plumber - we build the exterior discharge run.
**French drain?** Usually unnecessary for sump water - that's groundwater collection; discharge water just needs carrying.
